Georgia to import Azeri natural gas from 2007

16 July 2006 [02:35] - TODAY.AZ
Georgia may get a new source of natural gas as an alternative to supplies from Russia, according to a political agreement on Azerbaijani gas deliveries to the country starting next year.

The agreement was reached during a meeting of the presidents of Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan in Ceyhan at the commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan gas pipeline earlier this week, Georgian Energy Minister Nika Gilauri said on Saturday.

"An agreement was reached on the supply of 1.2 billion cubic metres of Azerbaijani export gas to Georgia, which will meet about 60 percent of Georgia's gas needs," the minister said.

The other 40 percent will be imported from Russia as before, the minister added.

According to Gilauri, gas from Azerbaijan will be supplied from the Shakh-Deniz field by the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzerum pipeline, to be commissioned at the end of 2006. The price of gas has not been set yet.

Currently Georgia consumes only gas supplied by Russia's Gazprom. The price of gas was raised from 64 U.S. dollars to 110 U.S. dollars per 1,000 cubic metres from 2006, Itar-Tass reports.
