Bulgaria seeks Azerbaijani investment

Bulgaria is interested in attracting Azerbaijani investments in different fields, said Emil Kerimov, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Bulgaria.

He noted that a business-forum aimed on establishing closer business relations between the two countries is planned to be held further. The investment opportunities of the country will also be featured during the forum.

The diplomat called agriculture and tourism as the foreground fields for development of cooperation between the two sides.

Bulgarian Agriculture Minister visited Azerbaijan in May 2014. The two countries signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of agriculture.

“Bulgaria with its great opportunities and experience in this field is a very important country for us. Bulgaria has an experience in specialist training in this field,” he said. “An agreement on cooperation between Ganja Agricultural Academy and Plovdiv Agriculture University has already been signed. As part of the agreement, the two sides are expected to exchange experience with each other. Bulgaria may also export agricultural fertilizers as well as machinery to Azerbaijan.”

Tourism is another sphere for cooperation between the two countries. Tourist field in Bulgaria is very developed.

The Tourism Ministry is interested in the growing tourist flow. Today, the two countries do not have a direct air flights. However, if the tourist flow grows, the two countries may think about launching the flight, the ambassador added.

The potential trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria does not correspond with the existing turnover. For the nine months of this year the trade turnover between them amounted at $123 million, according to the Azerbaijan State Statistics Committee.

Generally, Kerimov praised this year in terms of economic relations, calling it productive enough for cooperation.

”During the year, many mutual official and business visits, including visits of president, prime-minister, economy, agriculture, education ministers of Bulgaria to Azerbaijan were carried out. This year the Energy and Industry Minister, SOCAR’s head visited Bulgaria,” he stressed.

Kerimov added that only this year 10 documents were signed in such areas as environment, banking, education and law-energy.

Bulgaria recognized the independence of Azerbaijan on January 14, 1992. The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on June 5, 1992. The embassy of Bulgaria in Azerbaijan was opened in December 1999.
