EU regards Azerbaijan as important energy partner

The EU sees Azerbaijan as important energy partner, the EU's European Council President Herman Van Rompuy told journalists in Baku on Thursday.

"Azerbaijan is reliable partner both in oil and gas. We strongly support the Southern Gas Corridor," Rompuy said.

He said the EU wants to deepen ties with Azerbaijan.

"Azerbaijan is unique in many ways. The country saw impressive recent economic growth and the challenge is now to secure sustainability of growing economy and modernization," Rompuy said.

He also said Azerbaijan is showing its commitment to internal peace and security.

The Southern Gas Corridor is a major energy project for the EU. It is intended to diversify routes and sources of supply. It is aimed at ensuring EU's energy security.
