Azerbaijani university protesting students dispersed

19 September 2006 [13:00] - TODAY.AZ
"P.S.S" Security Service officers and about 50 civic uniformed men removed Independent Azerbaijan University students, who are going on hunger strike in the university halls, from the building.

Vugar Suleymanov, the university second-year student told the APA the security service officers and civil uniformed men entered the lecture halls and removed about 30 students insulting them at midnight. They are said to be sent by the university Rector Abbas Mustafayev. He said the students continue the hunger strike.

"The Rector wants to prevent the protest action for appeasing the scandal around the university," he said.

The students tried to meet with the rector at 10.00 today but security service officers removed them far from the university building. Vugar Suleymanov said they have appealed to President Ilham Aliyev and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation president Mehriban Aliyeva. They appealed to NGOs and asked a place for protest action.
