Bulgaria's Irina Bokova was reelected to a second term as head of UN cultural agency UNESCO Tuesday, the organization announced, dpa reported.

Bokova has been director-general of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 2009. The 61-year-old former foreign minister is the first woman and Eastern European to head the Paris-based agency.

UNESCO is best known for its World Heritage list and for its programmes to improve education in developing countries. Bokova has placed a strong focus on Africa and on promoting gender equality worldwide.
