Human Rights Watch: Police used excessive force when dispersing protesters in Tbilisi

27 May 2011 [11:36] - TODAY.AZ
Experts of international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) consider use of force when dispersing protesters on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi last night excessive and disproportionate.

Georgian government should launch an immediate, thorough, and impartial investigation into excessive and disproportionate use of force, Human Rights Watch’ statement says.

"Even if the Tbilisi demonstration was unauthorized, nothing can justify the beating of largely peaceful demonstrators," said Rachel Denber, Europe and Central Asia deputy director at Human Rights Watch. "Police responsible for beating protesters should be held to account".

However she said that "the government took a positive step in offering protesters an alternative venue tonight". "But police should never have resorted to beating protesters who posed no threat," she added.

Two people were killed during the dispersal of opposition demonstrations in Georgia. About 37 victims of the running-down accident during the riots have been hospitalized. Eight of them are policemen, 28 - ordinary citizens and one- journalist of ITV broadcaster.
