Driving license maybe issued at seventeen years of age in Georgia

On Friday, a legislative initiative to issue driver's licenses beginning at age 17 will be sent to the Georgian parliament. As the Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said yesterday at a joint briefing with the Georgian Education and Science Minister in the Government Office, the government considered this issue on Thursday.

Merabishvili believes that the highest legislative body will assess the initiative favorably, and that it will be enforce as of this summer. The new initiative will introduce the new course, "Road signs and movement safety", in the 2011 - 2012 academic year at educational institutions. This subject will be compulsory. Students will be required to pass a test on theory in schools.

In the case passing the exam successfully, students will be permitted to take the driving practice.

As Dmitri Shashkin said, educational institutions with the aid of the Police Academy will prepare all teachers, who will teach the theoretical course on the new subject.

The relevant group is working to create adapted textbooks.

He said that an amendment to introduce a new subject will enter into a Single national curriculum. Ministers believe that the introduction of the new subject in schools will make traffic safer.
