European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has urged the UN Security Council to promptly adopt a resolution on the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria, dpa reported.
"A clear resolution by the Security Council would mark a turn, and I plea for its adoption," Van Rompuy said in an address to the UN General Assembly.
He said a breakthrough on chemical weapons in Syria, in the form of a UN resolution, could open the doors to political solutions on the Syrian conflict including the convening of a new Geneva conference.
"The European Union is ready to provide all support needed to achieve a political solution," he said.
