'Possible Iran war is threat to security in regional context'

03 April 2012 [09:11] - TODAY.AZ
Possible start of hostilities in Iran will directly affect the security of the whole region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in Yerevan on Monday, Novosti-Armenia reported.

If the worst happens and military force is used, security not only of Armenia but also of Azerbaijan will be affected, given that Iran has three times more ethnic Azeris than Azerbaijan, the minister said.

"It is difficult to predict how they will react to use of military force against the current state of their residence, but there is no doubt that there would be refugees," said Lavrov at a joint press conference.

The Russian Foreign Minister said it is also clear that a significant proportion of these refugees will be in Russia, given that Russia has a large Azerbaijani diaspora.

"Security in a regional context and the security in the Arab world will be threatened. There are so many components that impact is difficult to predict. What is clear is that they will be very, very serious and negative," said the minister.
