Azerbaijani deputies voice attitude towards possible opening of Turkish-Armenian border

14 April 2009 [12:12] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani public has been recently seriously concerned over the talks about the possible opening of state borders between Turkey and Armenia, said deputy Hadi Racabli at today's spring session of Milli Medjlis.

"This issue is of serious concern of Azerbaijani citizens and the political elite of the country. Since the moment of gaining independence, Turkey was always by Azerbaijan's side", said he.

According to him, the possible opening of borders is a serious concern not only for the Azerbaijani public but also for Turkey.

"Today it is important to maintain the Turkish-Azerbaijani friendship and the solidarity of the Turkic world", noted Racabli.

Govhar Bakhshaliyeva in turn voiced confidence that Turkey will not open borders with Armenia.

"Azerbaijan has no closer friend than Turkey and no one will ever take Turkey's place for us", said deputy Igbal Aghazade, who also voiced hope that the ruling party of Turkey will not take a decision, contradicting to the national interests of Azerbaijan.

"It is not surprizing that the issue of possible opening of borders between Turkey and Armenia creates serious concern among the public. Armenia is an occupant country and it should be treated in line with documents, adopted on the international level", said deputy executive secretary of the Yeni Azerbaijan ruling party Mubariz Gurbanly.

He said Turkey always supported Azerbaijan's position on Nagorno Karabakh.

"Armenia also puts forward territorial claims towards Turkey. As a response to occupation of Azerbaijani lands Ankara cut the diplomatic relations with Yerevan. Pakistan and Arab states also do not maintain any ties with Armenia. Unfortunately, instead of condemning the occupational policy of Armenia, most European states put different pressures on Turkey under influence of the Armenian lobby", noted he.

Executive secretary of the Yeni Azerbaijan party Ali Ahmedov voiced confidence that borders between Turkey and Armenia will not open.

"Interests of Azerbaijan are interests of Turkey and vise verse", noted he.
