Asim Mollazade: "Results of elections again demonstrate the need for a new political elite in Azerbaijan"

16 October 2008 [12:09] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with Asim Mollazade, deputy of Milli Medjlis and chairman of the Party of Democratic Reforms.
- How would you comment on the results of the presidential elections?

- I can assess the results of elections in Nasimi district of Baku, where I could observe the voting process at 36 stations of constituencies 21, 22, 23 and the calculation of votes. I can note that the elections were transparent and democratic and voters were active.

For a deeper analysis of the results of the presidential elections we need information from all constituencies and voting stations, where the observers from our party and our representative in the CEC  took part. The final assessment of elections by the Party of Democratic Reforms will be made public on Friday but the preliminary analysis of the received information proves that most people in our country voted for working president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

- How would Azerbaijan benefit from recognition of openness and transparency of presidential elections in our country by all international observers?

- This is very important for the international image of Azerbaijan. Moreover, the confirmation of all international and local observers of the fact that Azerbaijan held democratic, open and transparent elections is very important for working president of our country Ilham Aliyev who received a mandate of high trust of the people.

Thus, the attempts of some officials who state that they have brought Ilham Aliyev to power would fail and Azerbaijani President would be able to completely rely on the Azerbaijani people, who elected him, in the sense of the further strategical course for development of our country.

- Is it possible to say that after the presidential elections in Azerbaijan, which were recognized as democratic and open, by preliminary assessments of international observers, our country will be called the most democratic country in the South Caucasus region?

- I think Georgia also held democratic presidential and parliamentary elections, which were highly appreciated by the world community. Today the world has witnessed open, democratic and free elections in Azerbaijan. In this connection, I do hope that the world community will give a precise assessment to those bloody presidential elections in Armenia.

- How will the results of elections in Azerbaijan influence the negotiation process on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno Karabakh?

- I think the results of democratic and open presidential elections in our country will influence the international image of Azerbaijan and considering the recent events in Georgia, the  world community will spare no efforts for the soonest, fair and peaceful resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

In this connection, it is timely to recall the recent unambiguous statement of US co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Matthew Bryza that Nagorno Karabakh conflict must be settled in the framework of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. On the whole, a situation when ally Azerbaijan and Georgia have all conditions for the Euroatlantic development and Armenia is controlled by a military and criminal regime, has established in our region.

By its aggressive, occupational policy, Armenia has become the hampering factor for all global processes, ongoing in our region. I hope the world community will assess the policy of Armenia and the fact of its occupation of Azerbaijani lands.

- Let's pass to assessment of the influence of the results of presidential elections in Azerbaijan on the internal political situation in our country. Is it possible to say that a candidate from a party, which took the second place in the elections, will soon turn into the leading opposition power in Azerbaijan?

- I do not think that it is possible to speak about serious prospects of a party, whose leader took the second place by results of presidential elections, for the percentage of votes was too low for all politicians who fought with working president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. At the same time, these presidential elections demonstrate the serious weakness of opposition powers, boycotting the elections... Such results of elections demonstrate the need for new political elite in Azerbaijan.

- How do you see the next five years in Azerbaijan?

- I think real steps will be taken for the further democratization in Azerbaijan, for building a civil society in our country, for ensuring freedom of speech. But all these processes require great attention and can not be implemented immediately. These processes must involve the whole society.
