Azerbaijani human rights activists to file claim against Baku city administration for permission of meetings

25 December 2007 [15:52] - TODAY.AZ
A group of Azerbaijani human rights activists and opposition organizations, which has repeatedly planned a meeting in support of free mass media in the country, intends to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights due to the refusal of the Baku city executive powers to sanction these actions.

"We are working with lawyers for appealing to a court, where we intend to protest against refusals of city administration to sanction meetings which were to be held in places determined by them", Eldar Namazov, member of the steering committee for meetings and public forum "For the sake of Azerbaijan" said during a press conference Tuesday.

He said in case the resolution of the court does not satisfy them, they plan to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

"We do not reckon on the fair consideration of our claim in the court of the country. Therefore, after passing all judicial instances, we will appeal to the European Court. I think with the help of international organizations, we will be able to attain urgent consideration of our claim as the powers almost prohibit the meetings of the opposition right before presidential elections", he added.

Moreover, the steering committee has sent a letter to the Baku city administration demanding to define places in the city, where the city powers allow holding meetings.

"I have sent a letter to the Baku city administration with a request to define places in the city, where meetings are permitted, as they do not allow holding meetings in places, previously defined in their own orders. Let them declare new places", E.Namazov said.
