Star Wars Day: Fans pay their tribute to the cult films - PHOTO

Millions of Jedi fans posted tributes to Luke Skywalker, C-3Po and Darth Vader on Twitter, the micro-blogging site and Facebook in celebration for the hugely successful franchise.

May 4 is dubbed “Star Wars Day”, mainly due to the infamous pun “may the force be with you” changing to “may the fourth be with you”.
 
Obsessed fans all over the world are set to use the day as an excuse to stage movie marathons at home and “wage impromptu light-sabre fights”. Such was the popularity of the day it has became one of the main “trending topics” on Twitter, where thousands of the same posts are monitored.

"It's nice that this particular date seems to observe and celebrate the power of the Force, and we're thrilled that Star Wars fans continue to find new ways to connect with a galaxy far, far away," said a spokesman for the Lucas films, the company behind the franchise.

"Of course, regardless of the date, the Force will be with us ... always."

The franchise, comprising of six action movies, is reported to have grossed more than £2.3 billion worldwide at the box office. This does not include the billions more made through DVD sales and merchandise sales.

The original "Star Wars" is the third most popular opening weekend film, after it took in $460.9 million (£303.6 million) in the United States in its original run while it had several reissues over the years. George Lucas, the director behind the franchise, was reported earlier this year to be spending $10m (£6.24m) to turn the original movie into a 3D experience.

The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas’s 1980 follow-up to Star Wars: A New Hope, was last month named the greatest movie sequel of all time.
