A man "returns the stolen cakes" 50 years later

23 April 2010 [15:30] - TODAY.AZ
A 65-year-old man who has spent 50 years feeling guilty after he stole a packet of Jaffa Cakes from work has now tracked down his former boss to reimburse him.
John Bibby, from York, was working at a holiday camp shop in Skipsea, East Yorkshire, in 1960 when he took the cakes from boss, Les Simpson, and scoffed the whole packet.

But half a century later, he was still so troubled by the theft, he traced Mr Simpson to Beverley, East Yorkshire, bought a box of the cakes and drove 50 miles to give them back and confess to his decades-old crime.

Mr Bibby, who was 15 at the time, said it was a weight off his shoulders to finally apologise.

'You forget so much over the years, yet this just stuck in my mind,' he told the Yorkshire Post. 'I still felt guilty and decided it was finally time to own up so I tracked Les down and phoned him up.'

Mr Simpson, 79, who sold the Linzi Coffee Bar in 1972 to become a professional artist, said he knew nothing about the theft and was 'shell-shocked' at Mr Bibby's confession.

But he said his former employee had no need to worry about his crime, saying: 'I don't even like Jaffa Cakes, I don't like oranges.'

The pair are now planning a reunion for the shop's former customers and staff.
