Eyub Huseynov: "The situation on the foodstuffs market in Azerbaijan is growing worse each year"

07 February 2009 [13:45] - TODAY.AZ
The foodstuffs market of Azerbaijan is in a poor state, said chairman of the Union of Free Consumers Eyub Huseynov speaking about the situation on the foodstuffs market of Azerbaijan.
According to him, if we assess the market by 5 scale system, our figure is at about 2.5 points.

"The situation is growing worse every year. This is because on the background of the economic development of the country private business is also developing, while the government lacks the policy of protection of consumers rights. Thus, an ordinary consumed remains with no protection. The main cause of "pollution" of the local foodstuffs market by low quality production are white spots in legislation. Therefore, it is necessary to improve national legislation and not allow "entrance" of low quality production to the market".

According to him it is not the first year that Azerbaijan has been the member of the European Neighborhood Policy, where the demand to ensure consumers with safe production is fixed. But, he said, unfortunately, this is not observed so far.

He said definite circles in the country are carefully concealing the facts of poisoning with foodstuffs.

"The Health Ministry is responsible for people's health and it also issues a certificate for foodstuffs. Then how can this Ministry recognize the facts of poisoning with foodstuffs when the certificate of this ministry if available. I have never witnessed the foodstuffs expertise in Azerbaijan to reveal at least one fact of violation. If I'm not mistaken there were two facts of such violations and then there were a refutation. I have never witnessed that any poisoned consumer has ever received a compensation.

Unfortunately, today official structures consider that the goods, sold on the local market, meet all the standards", said he.
