Holding such large-scale events as the 23rd Azerbaijan Championship and the 3rd Interregional Cup in Rhythmic Gymnastics shows that gymnastics is developing not only in Baku, but also in the districts of the country, Head coach of Azerbaijani national team in rhythmic gymnastics Mariana Vasileva told reporters Nov. 19 in Mingachevir.

The 23rd Azerbaijan Championship and the 3rd Interregional Cup in Rhythmic Gymnastics kicked off on Nov. 19 at the “Kur” Olympic Educational Sports Center in Mingachevir city.

“Six months ago, we opened a section of rhythmic gymnastics in Mingachevir, and since the beginning, 240 people applied for the participation. We held a selection, as it is very difficult for one coach to work with so many gymnasts, and therefore, 70 gymnasts are working now,” said Vasileva. “We decided to hold the competition here and show that gymnastics is developing in our districts.”

She noted that the number of sections of rhythmic gymnastics will increase in the districts in the near future.

“It is the third year that we hold the Interregional Cup at the same time with the Azerbaijan Championship,” said the head coach. “This year, the competition was attended by six districts – more than 50 gymnasts, and in general, more than 100 gymnasts participated in the competitions.”

“I am proud to note that 12 districts – Nakhchivan, Gobustan, Ismayilli, Kurdamir, Goychay, Shirvan, Gusar, Mingachevir and others develop gymnastics in Azerbaijan, and we are going to open the 13th section in the near future,” added Vasileva.

She said also that the professionalism level of gymnasts gradually rises in the districts.
