Azerbaijani ministry issues statement on explosion in Masalli - UPDATE

A strong explosion rocked the building of the Telecommunications Unit in southern Masalli region of Azerbaijan on Monday.
The Azerbaijani Ministry of Emergency Situations disseminated the information about the explosion in Masalli. The center of telephone calls "112" of the Ministry received information about the explosion, which occurred in the four-storey building in Masalli, the ministry said.

The specialists of the services of the ministry were immediately sent to the scene. The relevant bodies were also informed. According to the preliminary information, one dead person, four injured people were taken under the rubbles.

Three people have sustained injuries, Deputy Masalli Region Prosecutor General Vagif Bayramov said.

The injured have been taken to hospital. Rescuers are at the scene, searching for the dead or wounded under the rubble. Bayramov said the explosion collapsed a section of the building.

The Azerbaijani Emergency Situations Ministry's Southern Regional Administration is involved in the rescue operations. A Trend regional correspondent reported that two people were killed in the blast, according to witnesses.

Based on the preliminary version, gas leak caused the explosion, the Production Union Aztelekom told Trend.

According to Bayramov, the rescue work continues. In addition, it became known that a woman remains under the rubble. Bayramov said those rescued from the rubble have sustained minor injuries.

He said one of the walls of the building collapsed which is assumed to have caused the accident.

One dead body and two wounded people were taken under the rubble, Bayramov told Trend. The injured people were taken to hospital.

Deputy Prosecutor said that the dead person taken from the rubble was identified. She is an employee of telecommunications node Kishvyar Shahverdiyeva.

He said that it is possible that there are people still remain under the rubble. During the incident Ibadet Guliyev, Ziyafet Mammadov, Ilkin Ibishev and Natig Mammadov were injured, Bayramov said.
