11 September 2010 [12:07] - TODAY.AZ
Heavy rains caused serious problems in southern region of Azerbaijan.
The shower raised level of water in the rivers of Lerik region creating a flood threat in some villages. Stones and rock pieces brought by a water flow from the Talish Mountain shut off the Lankaran-Lerik highway. Chairman of the emergency commission of Lerik region Habil Malikov told APA that the highway was cleaned and traffic was restored this morning.

A rise of water level in mountainous rivers of Lankaran and Astara regions also created serious threat for nearby villages and settlements. Nearly 100 families were evacuated from the area last night, chairman of the emergency commission of Lankaran region Ilgar Dadashev told APA. They were temporarily settled in the houses of their relatives.

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic was banned on the Lankaranchay bridge last evening, but the traffic was allowed this morning because the water level was reduced. Nearly 20 families were moved to the houses of their relatives at the Javanshir and Vidadi streets of Lankaran town. Dozens of houses were flooded in Kosalar, Veladi, Upper Nuvadi, Ashla, Siyobili, Rvo and Tangarud villages of Lankaran region. Rescuers of the southern regional office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations rescued a man faced with flood threat.

The rise of water flow damaged Ashla bridge and removed a bridge in Dashdatuk village. Heavy rains also raised the level of Astara and Pensar rivers, chairman of the emergency commission of Astara region Mazahim Huseynov said.

Dozens of houses were flooded in Rudakanar village of the region. It restricted traffic in the mountainous roads. The heavy showers are continuing in the southern region. The local executive organizations were mobilized in the regions to eliminate the results of natural disaster.
