Permanent Secretariat of Turkic-speaking states' PA to function at Azerbaijani Parliament

14 September 2009 [15:37] - TODAY.AZ
The Permanent Secretariat of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Turkic-speaking states will operate at the Parliament of Azerbaijan, Co-Chair of the working group on the Azerbaijani-Turkish Intergovernmental Affairs Nizami Jafarov said.
"Regarding the fact that the events of the Assembly in Baku are held at the Azerbaijani Parliament, the secretariat must also operate at the Parliament," said the parliamentarian.

In last year's meeting of the Parliament Speakers of the Turkic-speaking countries held in Istanbul, an agreement was reached to establish the Parliamentary Assembly which will includes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkey. Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan refused to participate.

Jafarov said the summit of the Assembly to be held in Baku on Sept. 26-27 will also discuss transforming a permanent secretariat to the acting body.

"This is the first meeting after the establishment of the Assembly. Therefore, the issues that will be discussed will be determined at the opening of the summit by common agreement of the parties," Jafarov said.

According to the co-chair of the working group, the talks are being held with the parliamentarians of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to attend the Baku meeting.

"We would really like the Baku summit to be attended by all the Turkic-speaking countries. I think that the discussions with officials from each of the two countries will be fruitful," Jafarov said.
