21 August 2009 [09:18] - TODAY.AZ
On August 20, Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan Azad Rahimov met with athletes and their coaches who successfully participated in Canoe & Kayak World Championship held in the Canadian City of Dartmouth.
The Minister congratulated the winners Valentine Demyanenko, and also Sergey Bezuglyi and Maxim Prokopenko who gained silver and bronze medals.

The minister said that the successes achieved in a short term are the result of hard work of the Azerbaijani National Rowing Federation and coaches of the team.

"Canoeing is an elite sport, it distracts children and teenagers from bad habits, drugs and adverse impact of the street. I believe that after putting rowing center in Mingachevir city into operation even greater successes will be achieved. "

Participating in the event, the President of the Azerbaijani National Rowing Federation Elchin Zeynalov said not only adult athletes, but also teenagers have made progress in canoeing. One of the young canoeists of Azerbaijan has already won a pass to the Summer Olympic Games amongst teenagers to take place  in Singapore next year.

In the World Championship, Valentin Demyanenko gained gold medal in a single canoe competition in 200 meters, and Bezugly and Sergei Maxim Prokopenko won silver (1000 m) and bronze (500 meters) medals in a double canoe.
