Azerbaijan's population hits 8.922 million

Azerbaijan's population increased 969,000 compared to January 1999, the State Statistics Committee said.
Urban population totals 4,818,000 (54%) and rural population 4,104,000 (46%). According to the last census in April 2009, 4,372,000 of population are men and 4,550,000 are women.

Nearly 2,046,000 live in Baku, 398,000 in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and 6,478,000 in other cities and regions. Baku population totals 2.246 million including internally displaced persons and temporary residents.

Other largest cities for the number of population are as folllows: Ganja 313,000 (4.7%-increase from 1999), Sumgayit 310,000 (21,6%), Mingachevir 96,000 (2.1%), Shirvan 77,000 (10%), Shaki 63,000 (3.3%), Nakhchivan 74,000 (17.5%), Yevlakh – 58,000 (11.5%), Khankendi 55,000 (based on 1989 data), Khirdalan 92,000 (for 3.2 times) and Lankaran 50,000 (4.2%).

The most populated regions are Lankaran (206,000), Masalli (197,000), Shamkir (191,000) and Absheron (190,000).
