Azerbaijan can ban sale of doner

Republican Hygiene and Epidemiology Center Food Department head Imran Abdullayev said.

In January 2006, the Republican Center banned sale of chicken doner [Turkish fast food]. Doner is a food with half-cooked meat, he said.

“Chicken meat used for cooking doner unlike the veal is very tender and becomes iinfectious very easily which can lead to poisoning. Last year several people were poisoned with chicken doner at a restaurant in Baku. Therefore, we believe that chicken doner is always a threat since it is not fully cooked and micro-organisms in chicken meat is not fully destroyed during cooking.”

He said they were tasked with to control all outlets that sell doner and to check health of staff. Otherwise, they will be shut down.

We have learned that doner sells mix meats of different animals. Total of 37 doner outlets were fined and several of them were shut down in June. In some places there are no suitable conditions to prepare doner and seller do not comply with hygiene rules, he said.
