Bayil remand prison in Baku can be turned into museum

Azerbaijani Justice Ministry's Penal Service is studying proposals by the human rights activists to turn Bayil remand prison into museum.
"The issue of turning Bayil remand prison into museum is decided by president. We will submit public's proposals to the president," Azerbaijani Deputy Justice Minister and Head of the Penal Service Nazim Alakbarov said.  

Prisoners in the Bayil remand prison will be transferred to a new Baku prison in the coming ten days.

Some non-governmental organizations and human rights activists addressed the Penal Service to found a museum in the site of remand prison in Bayil settlement.

As many as 1,200 prisoners serve their sentences in Bayil currently. The remand prison was built in late 19th century. Joseph Stalin once also served sentence in this prison.

Public representatives got familiar with new remand prison in Azerbaijan today.

Alakbarov said as Bayil prison is located in the area of the National Flag Square, the issue of creating museum at remand prison's site must be studied in detail.
