First Azerbaijani expedition visits Antarctica

The first ever Azerbaijani expedition, head by president of the federation of extremal sports and Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Huseyn Baghirov visited Antarctica, said the press service for the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology.

As is reported the expedition started on December 25 of 2008.

The expedition left for the Antarctic from the Chile station of Patriot Hills. On the way the expedition members held scientific works, carried over 300 observation and measuring actions and took up to 2 kilos of different valuable geological probes.

By the information of the expedition group, transmitted through Iridium satellite system, on January 11 of 2009 they climbed the Winson mountain of 5,140 meters over the sea level.

The expedition members raised the flag of Azerbaijan, a bronze board with a photo of national leader Heydar Aliyev with his words "I am proud that I am an Azerbaijani" and on the other side - the photo of President Ilham Aliyev with the words "Azerbaijan to future with Ilham Aliyev".
