Picket against high internet tariffs to be held in Azerbaijan

22 December 2008 [18:00] - TODAY.AZ
President of the Internet forum of Azerbaijan Osman Gunduz sent a sharp letter to Azerbaijan's Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov, in which he said that the Ministry hampers the development of competitiveness and free market of Internet and his policy leads to the backwardness of our country.

According to Novosti-Azerbaijan, Gunduz stressed sharp deterioration in the quality and speed of Internet, along with the policy of monopolization in Internet, held by Abbasov's Ministry.

"Two days ago we sent a letter to Minister of Communication and Information Technologies Ali Abbasov in which we stressed the unbearable situation in Azerbaijani internet through the past 1-1.5 years. Why, we asked the ministry- is the cost of Internet in Azerbaijan 30 times more expensive than in neighbor countries and at the same time it is of worse quality?

We - the Internet-forum of Azerbaijan, are ready to hold a protest in front of the Ministry and we appeal to the Baku mayor's office in this connection. If the Minister does not take measures, we fixed, we will have to apply other legal methods of protest.

We informed the Minister about the causes of the established situation. Our country is developing and the citizens need better, high speed and quality Internet. Why do the Russian and Turkish citizens get information 30 times more effectively than we do? It means that these countries will outstrip us in the ICT sphere by 30 times in the next years!", noted he.
