22 December 2008 [10:47] - TODAY.AZ
By unofficial date, Canada currently accounts for 33,000 Azerbaijanis, said president of the Association of Canada-Azerbaijan cooperation Ilham Akhundov.
According to him, of this number 30,000 are coming from South Azerbaijan and only 3,000 are from the Azerbaijan Republic.

Akhundov voiced dissatisfaction with the level of organization of our diaspora in Canada.

"The situation is quite complicated as among our compatriots there are many who do not engage and is not interested in anything and just want to deal only with their professional business. But those, who are involved into the diaspora activity, sacrifice their personal business for diaspora. Thus, this is a complicated issue. At the same time, we certainly have success in attaining the goals and purposes, facing us know", said he.

Akhundov noted that most Azerbaijani citizens, thinking of emigration, turn their eyes to Canada because the level of social protection is high in this country.

"The living conditions are on the high level, government cares much about its citizens".

He stressed that on the whole Canada is in fact a country of many difficulties.

"The most difficult thing is employment. It is incorrect to think that it is easy to find job in this country. In fact, the powers of the country demand experience in Canada. How can one get experience without having a job? Still most people cope with it and sometimes it turns out that it is better not to work than to work in Canada", noted Akhundov.

He said about 90% of Azerbaijani citizens, willing to get permanent residence in Canada are imposters.

"Any person can come to Canada. As soon as he gets to Canada, he can get some material aid and provided with residence and monthly allowance. But at the same time a file opens on him and within a year the court hearing will be held on him to define the circumstances of his arrival to Canada, whether he had grounds or he deceived the government. If it is revealed that the arrival was held on decept, the person is certainly deported. If no, this person stays in Canada for further residence", concluded Akhundov.
