Imprisoned Ganimat and Sakit Zahidovs attend their father’s funeral - UPDATED

Imprisoned Zahidov brothers – editor-in-chief of Azadlig newspaper Ganimat Zahid and the newspaper correspondent Mirza Sakit will stay in Meyseri village of Shamakhi for 7 days after the death of Zahidovs’ father, member of the Monitoring Group of Human Rights Organizations, human rights defender Chingiz Ganizadeh told APA.

He said that Justice Ministry told him about it.
"We talked with the leadership of Justice Ministry and asked them to allow Ganimat Zahid and Mirza Sakit to stay in their father’s funeral for some more time. We are grateful to the ministry’s leadership for taking into consideration the appeal of human rights defenders," he said.

Zahidov brothers were taken to Meyseri village of Shamakhi at 06.00 today to attend their father Salim Zahidov’s funeral under the control of the employees of Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service.

Their mother Khadija Zahidova had appealed to Justice Minister Fikrat Mammadov asking to allow her sons to attend the funeral.

Salim Zahidov died on December 1 and was buried yesterday.

“This is a great loss for us. It is impossible not to grieve. But as mentioned by the officials, this step had never been taken in Azerbaijan.

I appreciate it. That’s why I am grateful to those, who made this decision”, Ganimat Zahid, who is attending his father Salim Zahidov’s funeral, told APA. Ganimat Zahid said it was impossible to predict that after being allowed to attend their father’s funeral, decision would be made to release him and his brother. Ganimat Zahid said he would be taken back to the jail together with his brother.

“But the term may be prolonged for a day,” he said.

Imprisoned editor-in-chief of Azadlig newspaper Ganimat Zahid and his brother Mirza Sakit have been allowed to attend the funeral of their father.

Editor-in-chief of Azadlig newspaper Azer Ahmadov told APA that Ganimat and Sakit Zahidovs were brought to Meyseri village of Shamakhi at 06.00. They will attend the funeral by afternoon today.
