Cavad Heyeti: "Azerbaijanis, residing in Azerbaijan and Iran, must become closer to each other"

21 November 2008 [11:51] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with Cavad Heyeti, world famous Azerbaijani cardiologist, linguist, folklore scientist, public figure, member of the International Paris Academy of surgeons, editor-in-chief of Varlyg magazine, published in Iran.
- What can you say about the recent ban on teaching Azerbaijani language and literature in Tehran and Muhaggi universities?

- Naturally, I admit that there is a state control in Iran, yet I have faced no obstacles in my activity, as along with the state control 30,000,000 Azerbaijanis, residing in Iran, feel themselves as real Azerbaijanis.

The Varlyg magazine, I am publishing in Iran, has been released for already about 30 years since 1979. About 80% of the articles in the magazine are published in ancient Azerbaijani language and just 20% in Persian. Today the Varlyg magazine is published once in a quarter.

Varlyg magazine is an enlightening magazine, on its pages we tell the reader about great Azerbaijani language, the history of our country, literature and cultural values of our people. That is we tell Azerbaijanis about their roots.

- What makes Azerbaijan and Iran closer?

- Both in Iran and Azerbaijan I feel at ease. It is impossible to separate these two countries. For many years South and North Azerbaijan were a single state. Only later the single state was divided into two parts owing to Russia, which resulted in appearance of existing problems.

- One of the Azerbaijani politicians Gudrat Hasanquliyev proposed an initiative to rename the country for North Azerbaijan. Do you think this idea can be executed?

- Such a proposal has no grounds. Iran and Azerbaijan are two different states, having their laws and traditions, I do not think that someone may take this serious seriously. Nevertheless, our peoples are close and may become even closer.

- Can you list the problems, facing our compatriots in Iran?

- The most important problems, facing people on the East, are mostly connected with their political and economic state. Azerbaijanis, residing in Iran, mainly face problems in these directions and and I think these problems are ineradicable. It should be noted that it is too difficult to engage in the politics in the East.

Eastern people and politics are incompatible. If you engage in the politics, you will face problems right away. Any politician faces two negative factors - either loses his personality or loses everything he has. In such conditions it is impossible to engage in the politics, as it creates negative events.

On the whole, no country has democracy, it can partially been recorded only in western countries.

- How do you think will the relations between the United States and Iran develop after new president comes to power?

- Everything primarily depends on the new leadership of Iran. Yet, I think, President Barak Obama can make positions of Iran and the United States closer.

- As far as we know, you are working actively and receive patients in Baku. Which diseases, you think, are typical for Azerbaijani residents?

- In the main, people in Azerbaijan complaint about problems with gall bladder, heart diseases. It is all caused by the fact that food that you eat is not suitable for our body. People in Azerbaijan smoke much, drink alcohol, eat too fat-rich or salty food. It all promotes the diseases, I have mentioned before.

Moreover, most citizens of Azerbaijan often have stress, which also affects their health. As a cardiologist, I recommend to spend no more than 15 minutes to each meal.

Mostly eat uniform food. Add more soups into your meals and like all eastern people, drink more tea.

- What should be done for our compatriots to feel more comfortable in Iran?

- The state must not interfere with the relations of our compatriots, residing in South Azerbaijan. The situation will further stabilize, as we are all Azerbaijanis. Moreover, Azerbaijanis residing in Azerbaijan and Iran, must be closer. This is a natural intention.
