Imprisoned editor-in-chief of Azadlyg newspaper prohibited to meet with defender

Yesterday the family of editor-in-chief of Azadlyg newspaper Ganimat Zahid, held in correctional facility No 17, met him in prison, said Zahid's wife Ayanda Mursaliyeva, Day.Az reports with reference to the Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety.

She said Ganimat Zahid received a letter from the Nasimi district court. "The letter reads that the court dismissed the claim on permitting Zahid's defender to meet him. The decision is explained by the fact that the appeal lacks Ganimat Zahid's signature. The claim was signed by my husband's defender Elchin Sadikhov and by me, as a family member", said Mursaliyeva.

The journalist's wife noted that according to the court Elchin Sadikhov is the lawyer of the Azadlyg newspaper not of Ganimat Zahid.

"My husband has no complaints about the detainment conditions and treatment by jail keepers", concluded Mursaliyeva.

It should be noted that last week defender Elchin Sadikhov filed a claim to the Nasimi district court as he is not allowed to meet editor-in-chief of Azadlyg newspaper Ganimat Zahid.
