Human rights activist Taisiya Gordeyeva to establish coalition of women's organizations to protect rights of soldiers in Azerbaijan

26 July 2008 [13:08] - TODAY.AZ
Taisiya Gordeyeva, deputy chairman of the Azerbaijan Soldier Mothers' Committee, is planning to create the coalition of women's organization for protection of soldiers' rights.
According to her, she has got the first positive response to this proposal.

"I have sent appeals to other human rights activist-head of the Helsinki civil assembly Arzu Abdullayev and head of the Institute for Peace and Democracy Leyla Yunus, as well as ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova.

I have received a response from Arzu Abdullayeva with proposals of taking definite steps. My proposal is to unite efforts of human rights activists and settle the issue of arrested soldiers, held in prisons on false changes in desertion and treason.

Azerbaijani soldiers want to serve and not to be humiliated by their commanders. All captured soldiers can not be included into the lists of traitors", said Gordeyeva.

She said she will soon appeal to the State Committee for rights of women and children, women's society of Azerbaijan and other women's public organizations.

"I offer them to unite and hold a monitoring of the state of imprisoned soldiers together. We have 2600 soldiers, held in prison and I am sure that if he talk to each of them, it will be defined that all of them are victims of poor conditions in the military units", noted Gordeyeva.
