Azerbaijani diplomat elected vice chairman of UN Council of Human Rights

Elections of a new chairman of the UN Human Rights Council and members of the bureau of the council for the third one-year term beginning from July 2008 were held in Geneva on June 19, according to Day.Az.
Nigerian diplomat Martin Ukhomoibkhi, leading the Nigerian diplomatic mission in Geneva, was unanimously elected the chairman, replacing Romanian diplomat Doru Costea, elected chairman of the Human Rights Council in June of the last year.

Permanent representative of Azerbaijan under the UN Department and other international organizations in Geneva ambassador Elchin Amirbekov, was unanimously elected member of the bureau from Eastern European regional group, who will fulfill functions of the vice chairman and the rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Council within a year.

Also permanent representatives of Canada, Philippines and Argentine were elected members of the bureau from their regional groups.
