CE launches campaign against physical punishment of children

Day.Az reports with reference to the CE Baku office that for this purpose the Council of Europe proposes initiative of elimination of physical punishment of children in all structures, including schools, penitentiary facilities, alternative guardianship, especially, in the family throughout the Council of Europe.

The Council of Europe plans to hold measures in three directions: legal reforms, example of example of position parents, raising information level.

This year, Holland, Greece, Portugal and Spain banned physical punishment of children in all structures. Thus, the number of CE member-states, adopting such a ban, reached 18. It should be noted that Azerbaijan is not on the list of these countries, but the CE Baku office holds measures to propagandize ban of physical punishment of children.

"Violence is a main violation of human rights. If we say that it is incorrect to beat adults, then it is not right to beat children as well. Children have equal rights with adults in the sphere of human rights protection and protection from physical pressure. Though physical punishment of children at schools and correctional facilities is banned in most countries of the Council of Europe, this ban does not cover families", said a source from the CE Baku office.

The first international event in the framework of the campaign of ban of physical punishment of children will be held in Zagreb, Croatia on June 15. The event will be attended by senior representatives of the governments, international organizations, municipalities, NGOs, journalists and ombudsmen.
