Azerbaijani frontier guards shoot Iranian citizen dead - UPDATED

The Azerbaijan State Frontier Service has released a statement regarding the incident on the Azerbaijani-Iranian border.

The statement says the incident occured on June 3 at 03:30 in the territory of Yedisha village of Jalilabad.

The Iranian smugglers attempted to smuggle drugs via the Azerbaijani border, but failed in it.

The confiscated were 39 kg of hashish, 3 kg of heroine, 1 AKMC gun, 5 7.62 mm caliber gun shells, 2 night vision devices, 4 cell phones and $5,900.

A criminal case was instituted under the due articles of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. Operative search measures are underway.

Day.Az reports that the incident occured at 5:00 a.m. in the territory of Zahmatabad village of Jalilabad.

There were four trespassers. One of them was killed, the second managed to escape to Iran and two were wounded. They were brought to a hospital in Jalilabad, where underwent surgery. Their state is currently assessed as moderately grave.

The trespassers were citizens of Iran Hasanzade Israfil Barat oghlu, born in 1961, and Mahammadi Ruhulla Mirzahan oghlu, born in 1983. The personality of the killed has not been defined.

Interfax reports with reference to Lider TV channel that the trespassers did not obey the demand to stop, following which a fire was opened on them.

In the result, one of the trespassers was killed and two were wounded. Investigation is carried on the case. The trespassers are proposed drug smugglers. The State Frontier Service is clarifying the circumstances of the incident.
