Head of Committee against Torture sends letter to Azerbaijan's Interior Minister on results of monitoring in 14 regions

"I have held a monitoring in 14 investigation wards of temporary detainment of Azerbaijan's police stations together with my assistant on February 19 and 20".

The due statement was made by Elchin Behbudov, head of the Azerbaijan Committee against Torture.

"The monitoring was held in Hajiqabul, Kurdemir, Ujar, Yevlakh, Mingechevir, Geranboy, Agdam, Terter, Barda, Agjebedi, Beylaqan, Imishli, Saatli and Sabirabad regions of Azerbaijan", Behbudov noted.

According to him, the main cause of the monitoring was the information accoridng to which Zabit Gafur ogly Abbasov, born in 1959, died in the office of the investigator of the Hajiqabul police station on February 16 of 2008.

"According to the relatives of the deceased, no traces of violence were found on his body. He dies of heart attack. Yet, the fact that he died in the police station, arises suspicions", Behbudov announced.

By results of the monitoring Elchin Behbudov has sent a letter to Azerbaijan's Minister of Internal Affairs Ramil Usubov.
