Mehriban Aliyeva: "It is a positive fact that the role of women in the Azerbaijani society increases with each passing year"

"The issue of violence against women and children is being frequently debated in the last few years. All of us know that Azerbaijan has great traditions connected with the family and in this sense I consider that violence against women is inadmissible from the ethical point of view. It is a positive fact that the role of women in the Azerbaijani society increases with each passing year", President of Heydar Aliyev's Foundation, Milli Medjlis deputy Mehriban Aliyev said during the signing ceremony of the document "Against violence towards women in the 21st century".

Mehriban Aliyeva noted that the signed document will strengthen cooperation with international organization and reduce violence against women and children in Azerbaijan.

Hijran Guseynova, chairman of the State Committee for issues of a Family, Women and Children, attending the ceremony, stressed the importance of the signed program and noted that the violence against women and children has reduced significantly  through the last 4 years.

"Thus, 3241 facts of violence were recoded in 10 months of 2007 against 3857 cases in 2006", she noted.

The UN resident coordinator in Azerbaijan Bruno Puezat also voiced hope that the program "Against violence towards women in the 21st century" will improve the situation in this sphere.

It should be noted that the program is intended for 20 months and financed by Heydar Aliyev's Foundation and the  Fund of UN population.

The State Committee for issues of a Family, Women and Children was empowered to implement the program.

The said program involved a number of measures to help reduce the number of crimes against women, as well as the creation of rehabilitation centers for victims of violence in Baku and the regions of the country.
