US assists Azerbaijani government in improving Emergency Medicine

17 May 2007 [09:49] - TODAY.AZ
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded a mutli-million dollar grant in cooperation with leading oil companies and the International Medical Corps to assist the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan in introducing a modern, evidence-based approach to Emergency Medicine, US Embassy told.

Updating the emergency medical dispatch system is a critical part of this initiative and a four-day training course for emergency medical dispatchers will launch this component, APA reports.

Emergency Medical Dispatchers play a key role in the delivery of emergency care as they are the first point of contact for patients activating the Emergency Medical System by phone. With the goal of improving the quality of dispatch services, IMC's Emergency Medicine Development Initiative will host the Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatch Training from May 13-20, 2007. The course will be conducted by international experts from the acclaimed Priority Dispatch Corporation (USA), a unique company that by using proven technology and expert systems is positioned to be the leading authority on emergency communication protocols in the world. Priority Dispatch Corp. will conduct two identical sessions (May 13-16 & May 17-20) with 25 dispatchers from Baku and Ganja cities in each session.

The Priority Dispatch Training is a part of a larger, million dollar project called the 'Emergency Medicine Development Initiative' (EMDI) which is coordinated by International Medical Corps and funded by USAID, Hess, Chevron, BTC and SCP.

EMDI provides technical assistance to the Government of Azerbaijan in a collaborative effort to strengthen the delivery of emergency medical services within the broad parameters of the country's healthcare system.
