2,000 thalassemia patients registered in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan's Hematologists and Transfusiologists Society and Turkish Hemoglobin Circle organized an international conference on the theme "Problems of thalassemia." Specialists from Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Italy and Switzerland are attending the conference.

Deputy Health Minister Senan Kerimov said that 8.7% of Azerbaijani population (every 12) is thalassemia carrier. About 200 children are born with thalassemia every year. There are about 2000 thalassemia patients in the country.

Noting tat the state's care on thalassemia patients has increased recently, Kerimov said the law on hereditary diseases hemophilia and thalassemia was adopted. Besides, the Cabinet has approved state program on hereditary diseases hemophilia and thalassemia. According to the program thalassemia patients are provided with free medicines and donor blood.

Chief of Azerbaijan's Hematologists and Transfusiologists Society Chingiz Asadov said that they are taking measures to reduce the number of thalassemia patients.

Noting that they society has been cooperating with Turkey in the filed of thalassemia treatment since 1990, Asadov said treatment, prophylactics of thalassemia, bone marrow transplantation will be debated in the conference, APA reports.
