Roundtable held on anniversary of Elmar Huseynov's murder

03 March 2007 [09:00] - TODAY.AZ
Roundtable on the second anniversary of the assassination of editor-in-chief of "Monitor" journal Elmar Huseynov was held yesterday.

Editor-in-chief of Ganun journal Shahbaz Khuduoglu said that they are dissatisfied with the investigation, APA reports.

Musavat leader Isa Gambar and Azerbaijan Popular Front Party leader Ali Kerimli recollected Elmar Huseynov and called on political organizations to unite to prevent the pressure on press.

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the US to Azerbaijan Anne Derse also called on to find and punish the criminals.

As the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy and Human Rights Barry Lowenkron said when he visited Baku in December, "attacks against journalists like Mr. Huseynov are attacks against democracy itself".

"Azerbaijan has chosen, of its own free will, a democratic future. I urge the Azerbaijani authorities, in the service of that great goal, to redouble their efforts to ensure justice is done. Find and prosecute the killers of Elmar Huseynov. Honor him and all those who believe in freedom by implementing fully Azerbaijan's commitments to rule of law, media freedom, and democracy," the Ambassador said.

Head of Council of Europe office in Azerbaijan Denis Bribosia also wanted the murderers to be punished. He said he believes that the problem will be solved fairly.

Independent journalists Azer Hesret blamed international organizations for Elmar Huseynov's death.

"Council of Europe, US Department of State and other international organizations killed Elmar. They did not take necessary measures to uncover Elmar's murder," he said.
