Kamran Musayev: "Heart transplant surgery is possible in Azerbaijan"

But transplantation is not only a medical or surgical case. It has social and legal sides. I believe that heart transplant surgery will be implemented in Azerbaijan after solving all problems such as – donor, in what cases we can take the donor's organ, who will permit the transplantation, Assistant director of Central Clinic Hospital, cardiovascular surgeon, chairman of the Azerbaijani Cardiovascular Surgery Society Dr. Kamran Musayev told the APA.

He said that heart transplantation has been performing since 1970 in the US and is applied in most countries of the world.

Dr. Musayev said that heart for transplantation is obtained from a donor who is brain dead. Investigations are carried out to prolong the donor heart by six hours, which can survive four hours. Artificial heart is being prepared at present.

Dr. Musayev said that the majority of cardiovascular operations started to be performed after Central Clinic Hospital was opened in Azerbaijan. About 2,000 cardiovascular operations were performed in the Central Clinic Hospital within 5 years. 60-65% of them were aorta coronary shunting.

During aorta-coronary shunting applied in ischemic heart disease narrowed aortas is substituted by new ones. Usually during this operation heart is stopped and the surgery is held through artificial blood circulation. But during last years this surgery is held with new methods without stopping the heart, the doctor said.

70% of coronary artery bypass grafting is held on beating heart in our clinic. It is possible to change all vessels of the heart during this surgery.

Musayev also said that wide spread of heart surgery reduced the number of patients who address to foreign counties.

Azerbaijanis used to go to neighbour counties for heart surgery, but no the situation has changed. We receive appeals from foreign counties especially from Russia, Iran, Turkey, Georgia, and Central Asia for surgery. Foreigners who work in Azerbaijan do not go to their counties for surgery. For example citizens of England, India, Pakistan, Moldova and some other countries have been operated in our clinic, Kamran Musayev said.

According to Dr. Musayev, as all over the world, ischemic disease is occurred mostly in Azerbaijan too.

Ischemic disease gets younger in over the world. Today mostly, young people appeal to doctor for this disease which occurs because of social situation, feeding, stress, smoking. According to the 2006 report of the World Health Organization, this disease causes death and disablement, he said.

Musayev added that if the patient dressed to the doctor on time, he can long life using new treatment methods.
