14 August 2006 [19:39] - TODAY.AZ
Life-term prisoner of Azerbaijan's Gobustan jail Kamandar Aslanov died early this morning.

Families of Gobustan prisoners told the APA lifer Alsanov felt bad due to hot weather on 12 August. He asked prison officer Gorkhmaz Hasanov to open the ward's window.

"But the officer did not open the window and insulted the prisoner instead. And when the prisoner put up resistance, he beat him. In addition, Hasanov took him to punishment cell without informing the prison chief as the latter has the right to this," the prisoners' families said.

It is reported that on 13 August, inspectors heard voices from the punishment cell early in the morning and when they opened the door they saw Aslanov cutting his vessels. They stitched the prisoner's vessel and took him to the ward again.

Aslanov's dead body was found morning.

Prisoners of the building #6 are reported to demand punishing of the officer Gorkhmaz Hasanov as he caused the death of lifer Magbert Baghirov on 19 May this year. They say Hasanov's behavior lead to Baghirov's committing suicide.

Kamandar Aslanov was accused of manslaughter under article 94 of Criminal Code in 1995. He was born in Guba in 1996.

Garadagh district prosecutor Tariel Gurbanovtold the APA Aslanov died of heart failure. He said no signs of violence were found on his body during the examination in the prison.

"The prisoner's heart could not tolerate hot weather. No criminal case was launched as it is a natural death," the prosecutor said.

Gobustan prison chief Sedaget Aghayev refused to comment on the matter to the APA.
