Students keep going on hunger strike

19 June 2006 [13:24] - TODAY.AZ
The students of the private Independent Azerbaijan University (IAU) have been going on hunger strike demanding restoration of their rights for nineteen days.

Protesting fourth-year student Elnur Mammadov said to APA that he and five more protesters have serious health problems. Though the First Aid Hospital’s doctors tried to take them to hospital, the students refused. They received first aid at the university hall.

Mammadov also said the time they allotted to the Education Ministry to meet their demands will end tomorrow, and all the protesting students will give up Azerbaijan’s citizenship if their demands are not satisfied. They are going to sue both the Ministry and the university authorities.

Public lawyer for the students Rashid Hajili told that an application of claim is not made at present. He said the any claim can be raised after the dispute between the Ministry and the university is solved by court and added that they will wait until this decision.

"On the other hand we need to wait for the end of the talks between the Education Ministry and the university authorities," the lawyer said.

Hajili also said he will try to participate in the court sitting on the case regarding the Ministry and the university though the students will not be sides there, APA reports.
