Nijniy-Novgorod police kills Azerbaijani using torture

24 May 2006 [13:43] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani residents of Nijniy-Novgorod city, Russia, staged a protest action demanding unbiased investigation of Azerbaijani Mustafa Bakirov' death.

In the protest action near the Kanavinski subway, the protesters said that Mustafa Bakirov was killed by the law enforcement bodies May 22. The Ninjniy-Novgorod Prosecutor's Office reported that Bakirov died of taking high dosage of heroine. OMON forces moved to the site to provide security of the Azerbaijani protesters.

The action suffered no incident. The protesting Azerbaijanis explained the reason of their action to journalists. The say that taxi driver Bakirov was arrested near the Kanavinski subway. Three unidentified persons in civil uniform assaulted on Bakirov. Eyewitnesses say they fettered Bakirov and took him to unknown direction. The body of the Azerbaijani driver was found in morgue next day.

Human rights defender Sergei Shimovol rejects the version that Bakirov died of taking high dosage of heroine.

"Since he was fettered, how can he possibly take drugs? On the other hand, Musatafa Bakirov was not a drug addict, he never faced charge of drug addition or illicit drug traffic. The matter is Bakirov died 15 or 20 minutes later when he was forcibly taken to unknown direction. The militiamen even could not manage to take him to hospital," the rights defender said.

Shimovol also said that he witnessed signs of torture on the body of Bakirov.
"So, his relatives have all grounds to claim that Musatafa Bakirov was killed by undergoing torture," he said.

A forensic medical examination will be made on the body today. It will be sent to Azerbaijan for bury after being examined, APA reports.
