Azerbaijani smugglers detained in Georgia

Aleksi Aleksishvili, Georgian Finance Minister demands introduction of stricter control at the customs checkpoints.

The corresponding statement was made by the Minister at the press conference on Sunday, dedicated to the Saturday night special operation by the Financial Police and the Customs Department, as a trunk heading from Azerbaijan, loaded with smuggled goods entered the Lilo-1 customs terminal without clearance, Georgia's Prime-News agency reports.

According to Aleksi Aleksishvili, the Ministry of Finance of Georgia will forward the issue on prosecution of the accomplices, as an organised criminal group of representatives of different governmental bodies were engaged in it.

The price of the smuggled goods amounted to USD 70-100 000, the Minister said.

The Financial Police detained Mamuka Matchavariani, employee of the Registration Service of the customs terminal, Ziadkhan Aliev and Elchin Geidariev, owners of the smuggled goods and the officers of the security police of the Isani-Samgori District - Tariel Nikoleishvili and Yuri Sidenko on charges of smuggle.
