State agency to strengthen control over food products

16 February 2006 [17:30] - TODAY.AZ
A part of food products in Azerbaijan does not meet required standards, says Ramiz Hasanov, general director of State Agency on Standardization, Metrology and Patent.

The Agency has already started to investigate foodstuffs, strong and weak drinks, meat products as well as devices of daily usage. As the result of the investigations, prohibition was put on production and import of certain goods, ANS informs.

Mr. Hasanov says the worst situation is observed in oil production field: "The oiliness percentage of 200 grams' package is shown 82. But as the result of the examination the figure came out to be far from the shown, 20-30 percent."

Situation in strong drinks field is not better. Wine plants are given one month to improve quality of products. Otherwise, license of the plants will be annulled.

Mr. Hasanov also spoke about fields to be checked soon: "We are going to hold checks in foods, drinks, sausages. Control on these products will be tightened."

All goods imported to Azerbaijan should be first checked by the Agency. But Mr. Hasanov says the Agency can not afford all control issues itself. According to him, citizens should also be active in protection of their health. A hot line will be established in the Agency through which the citizens may inform the Agency of any illegal production as well as products of poor quality.
