Shamkir, youth capital of 2016

Shamkir city, attracting local and foreign tourists with its favorable climate, rich cultural and historical heritage, was chosen "Youth Capital" of 2016.

The selection was carried out with the organizational support of the Youth and Sports Ministry with the aim to develop and expand youth activities in the regions of Azerbaijan.

The active participation of young people in social, political and cultural life of the city is provided in the city which has been chosen "Youth Capital".

The symbolic key of "Youth Capital" was delivered to Shamkir on February 3 and was marked with a solemn ceremony. The young people with the 50-meter state flag reached the central square, where thousands of peoples gathered to welcome the symbolic key.

Addressing the event, Chief of Shamkir City Youth and Sports Department Emin Ismayilov congratulated the city’s youth.

“Now we should be more responsible. We are targeting to realize new projects. Today, Shamkir is conducting several measures to realize the youth policy,” he said

Shamkir is one of the oldest region of the country, located 399 km away from Baku. The city was known as “Shamkur” since the fifth century and served as a large trade and commercial center.

The favorable climate, pristine nature, rich cultural and historical heritage, and infrastructure make the region attractive for tourists.

Shamkir’s most attractive feature is in the pages of its German past. German colonies, which existed here in the 19th-20th centuries, left a lot of historical artifacts and the some streets were even lined with German houses, Lutheran churches, wine production, etc.

The whole region is full of greenhouses where the households cultivate vegetables and export the produced products to neighboring countries.

Today Shamkir is not only the historical past, but also a modern city that offers visitors a range of possibilities. Over the past several years, Shamkir literally transformed and now the city has new landscaped parks, hotels, entertainment complexes, restaurants, and a modern shopping mall.

One of the symbols of modern Shamkir is a unique Flag museum, designed in the form of an eight-pointed star. Lined with glass that lets light flood in, the two-story building contains valuable exhibits, informing visitors of the ancient and modern history of Azerbaijan.
