The State Agency for Geodesy and Cartography was created in Azerbaijan under the presidential decree.

President Ilham Aliyev ordered on September 14 the transfer of the State Aerial Geodesy Company and the Baku Cartographic Factory to come under the new Geodesy and Cartography Agency. Earlier, these facilities were subordinate to the abolished State Committee for Land and Cartography.

The Cabinet of Ministers was instructed to resolve issues arising from this order, including financing and placement. The order also approved regulations on the State Agency of Geodesy and Cartography, which will thus far employ 45 specialists.

The agency will carry out work in the field of geodesy, topography, mapping, gravimetry, and cartography. It will also create geographic information systems of national importance.

Moreover, the agency will specify the boundaries of the territorial units of the country, and also be involved in the delimitation, demarcation, and re-demarcation of the land and sea borders of Azerbaijan.

The Geodesy and Cartography Agency will have an apparatus, local departments and structures. It will be headed by a chief appointed by the Ecology and Natural Resources Minister. The Ministry will also approve the cost estimates and revenue of the agency.

The agency was created after the abolishment of the State Land Committee, which operated in the country since 1992. The committee was the central executive power body implementing land cadastre, land monitoring, geodesy, topography, mapping, gravimetry, and land reform, etc.

One of main works of the committee was land reform during which up to 3,500,000 subjects entitled to land sharing were provided with the land.
