In celebration of Mexican Independence Day, the Mexican Embassy in Azerbaijan invites guests to taste its national cuisine prepaid by chef Angel Vazquez between September 16 and 18.

The venue of the event is the “Gate 25” restaurant in Baku’s Demirchi Tower.

Mexican food is popular all around the world. From tacos to enchiladas and nachos, Mexican influences in cooking can be found anywhere. Those native to Mexico pride themselves in using natural, local ingredients that generations before them grew up using. The ingredients that they could easily access were the main staples of their cuisine.

Mexican food cuisine dates back almost 9000 years. The ancient Mayans consumed a variety of different types of squash and sweet potatoes, local animals and insects, and any type of fruits or vegetables that could be harvested.

As the result of its geographical position, the cuisine inherited many ingredients and culinary influences from Spain, Asian, African, and European cuisines, as well as from ancient tribes living in Mexico.

The basic staples are native foods such as corn, beans, and chili peppers. Europeans introduced a large number of other foods, the most important of which were meats from domesticated animals, dairy products, and especially cheese and various herbs and spices.

Thanks to its colorfulness, taste, and the variety of samples, Mexican cuisine was featured into the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.

The Mexican people consider food one of the most important parts of their culture. It’s said that to learn one’s culture, you must first learn how they cook. Looking at the cuisine and food culture of Mexico, it is obvious that the people who inhabit the country are a resourceful people who take nothing for granted. They take what they can easily get and produce delicious, nutritious meals. Never bland and always interesting, Mexican food is a favorite amongst Americans and the world over.

Mexican Independence Day is a holiday to celebrate the “cry of independence” on September 16, 1810, which commenced the revolt against the Spaniards. Hidalgo was one of the nation’s leaders during the War of Independence in Mexico. There is no scholarly agreement on what was exactly said by Hidalgo, but his speech, also known as the “Cry of Dolores,” was made on that day to motivate people to revolt against the Spanish regime.

Mexico recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991 and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992. Azerbaijan's Embassy in Mexico was established in 2006.

In 2007, Azerbaijan opened its embassy in Mexico City and Mexico followed suit by opening its embassy in Baku in 2014.

Earlier this August, Baku hosted the Holidays of Mexico, the event sought to get Azerbaijanis acquainted with the cultural traditions and the national cuisine of Mexico.
