There is good news for those who have been tired of the abnormally hot weather dominating the country for several weeks.

Forecasters predict a drop in temperatures on August 20 in Azerbaijan, bring some respite from the exhausting heat that exceeded 40 degrees C on some days.

In Baku and Absheron peninsula, the weather will be partly cloudy and without precipitation.

On Thursday, the capital will see temperatures between 32 and 34 degrees C during the day and 24-26 degrees C at night.

In Absheron peninsula, the temperature is expected to stand between 30 and 35 degrees C, and then dropping to a low of 23-26 degrees C at night.

For beach lovers, the water temperature at Absheron beaches will be moderate, varying between 25 and 28 degrees C.

Unlike the capital, Azerbaijani regions will see storms, rain, and westerly winds. The temperature at night is predicted to be between 20-25 degrees C, and from 32-37 degrees during the day, reaching up to 41 degrees in some regions.

From August 20 to 23, the temperature will drop by 5-8 degrees. Unstable weather conditions, increasing northwesterly winds, partly cloudy weather, and rain are expected in the country. There is a possibility of downpours.

From August 21, the Absheron peninsula will be hit with unstable weather. The strong Khazri wind, which is predicted to blow across the peninsula, might affect people sensitive to weather fluctuations.

However, a temperature close to climate norm aided by the moderate Khazri wind on August 22, will be favorable for those weather-sensitive people.

Earlier, Gulshad Mammadova, the deputy chief of the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry said that record highs in the country were predominantly recorded in July-August of the last few years.

“According to several researches, the hottest temperature of 42 degrees C in Baku and Absheron peninsula was reported in 2011,” she stressed.

Among the country’s regions, the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic experienced the hottest August in 2000. “Nakhchivan’s Julfa and Ordubad regions were hit by 46 degrees C temperatures,” the deputy chief noted.

This year, the heat arrived in Azerbaijan very quickly.

According to the Telman Zeynalov, the chairman of the Environmental Council under Azerbaijan's Ecology Ministry, the reason for such an early onset of the heat in our country lies in return of "El Niño," leading to cyclones, floods, heat waves, and droughts around the world.

A climatic event occurs every two to seven years, characterized by warming of surface waters and a reduced upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water off the western coast of South America.
