Many tourists are expecting to visit Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku during the significant sporting event for both Azerbaijan and Europe - inaugural European Games on June 12-28.

When visiting a new place, most tourists will want to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings - figure out where to go, how to get there and so on …

How does a bird’s eye view of Baku sound? Then you should visit the highest point in the Azerbaijani capital - the Upland Park for sure!

Initially, in the early 20th century the Park was called the “English Park”, as some English soldiers were buried here after they arrived in Baku on the back of the overthrow of the Emperor.

The name was changed in 1939 when the USSR government erected a monument in honor of Soviet politician, Sergey Kirov. After the Soviet Union collapsed, the Park was once again renamed - it is now called the Upland or Dagustu.

The Upland Park is a beautiful green area which offers a picturesque view of the capital of Azerbaijan and its bay.

The place which gives a panoramic view of the city is an ideal spot for photo lovers.

This summer it is likely many photos will be taken from this very spot as it offers the best view of Baku. With an expected 6,000 athletes on their way to Azerbaijan for the Games, Baku will be filled with activities and tourists.

The Park is beautiful both at night and during the day. A beautiful modern fountain looking like a waterfall near the Park adds some unusual atmosphere to the place.

After its reconstruction in 2011-2013, the Park got even more beautiful! Alleys and terraces are connected to each other by stairs, and the area offers a breathtaking view of the Caspian Sea. Now, this Park has become one of the most beautiful places of recreation in the capital.

The Upland Park can be reached by a free cable railway (funicular) in 7-8 minutes from the Boulevard or by climbing up the endless stone stairs.

But, many will recommend entering the Park right from the top – from the square, where the country’s houses of Parliament, Alley of Martyrs, and the world-famous symbol of modern Baku, the Flame Towers are located. This place can be reached by both public transport and taxis.
