Commission investigates causes of strong fire in Baku

The State Commission which was established by order of President Ilham Aliyev in connection with the fire that occurred in Baku's Azadliq Avenue on May 19 held its first meeting on the same day.

Addressing the event Abid Sharifov, the deputy prime minister confirmed that the fire claimed 14 lives: of which eight women, six men and five children. 51 people suffered injuries, ranging from serious to mild. All are currently receiving treatment.

The government already reassured the public by saying the state will carry all the costs of the accident. Sharifov further confirmed that the commission will work establish a valuation of the damages and endeavor to compensate residents for their losses.

As of May 20, the Health Ministry reported the number of deaths reached 15.

“Currently, some 14 people out of the 34 who were hospitalized on May 19 are treated in hospital,” the ministry reported.

The victims of the fire will be taken care of and given appropriate accommodation, said Baku Mayor Hajibala Abutalibov, who arrived at the scene soon after the incident.

He also said that the commission will discuss and determine whether the fire was caused by the foam plastic facing. “The commission will determine whether the cause of the fire was due to flammable cladding materials, then a decision will be made about their disassemble or replacement by non-combustible materials,” he said.

Police arrested Miryusif Makhmudov, the head of Global Construction, who has been suspected of using substandard building materials when facing the building.
